Apples
The Bochgoch orchard was established in November 2002, with the first trees planted in January 2003.
We have a variety of trees, for a variety of purposes.
Bakers Delicious. A Welsh variety, high quality dessert apple. Creamy white flesh, crisp and juicy.
Bramley's Seedling. Apple pies.
Coxs Orange Pippin. The finest flavoured eating apple - enough said.
Dabinett. Cider variety -- sweet flavour.
Greensleeves. Cross between James Grieve and Golden Delicious, self fertile and good pollinator.
Katy. A sweet dessert apple.
Kingston Black. Cider variety -- bitter, the Blackthorn cider tree.
Morgan Sweet. Cider variety -- A Welsh variety, (unsurprisingly) sweet.
Yarlington Mill. Cider variety -- bitter.
The orchard lies on the side of the Tywi valley between Carmarthen and Llandeilo in the West of Wales.
Not ideal apple growing country, but land with spirit and fertility.
It'll be a year or two yet before those trees become fully productive, at which stage the intention is to commence
cider, chutney and apple juice production.
Autumn 2005>> Slight fly in the ointment, as we've not had a single apple off the trees this year! Scrumpers, birds or bad weather? - the jury is out. Back to the drawing board, mulch mats? fertiliser? better drainage? there must be an answer...
Spring 2006>> Bees are buzzing and blossoms blossoming(!), mulch mats are down and weeds are cleared away...finger crossed for 2006.
Autumn 2006>> Oh, sour, small and few and far-between...fingers crossed for 2007.
